Winter Fashion Trends to Look Out for, According to Fashion Editors
Winter is coming, people! As a fashion editor, I want you to be prepped with the coziest and most stylish pieces for the season. A few months ago, the fall/winter 2024 runway gave us a good idea of what we might see during this chilly season. In our fall fashion roundup, we highlighted some big trends such as leopard prints, color-blocking, and ski-influence in fashion. These trends will continue to be everywhere into the winter, but hey, why not direct your gaze (and pockets) to a few more?
Aside from your winter staples like sweaters and coats, we’ve compiled five trends we’ve seen on the runways and of course, on the streets of our favorite celebrities and content creators. With everything from specific colors to fur or faux fur and even purpose pieces like the stylish balaclava, this winter is about taking style to the next level.
Shades of Red
Red in the wintertime is by no means groundbreaking (I mean it’s a staple color for the holiday season, after all). However, this winter deep reds and burgundy hues are having their moment. Try incorporating some burgundy pieces into your winter outfits in the form of simple accessories like scarves or hats, or maybe even get yourself a burgundy sweater.
Everyday Suiting
The office siren trend is alive and well, but it doesn’t stop when the weather gets cold. After the highly-rated Saint Laurent SS25 runway show featuring several oversized suits and jackets with sharp lapels and sophisticated ties, we’ll continue to see workwear influence everyday fashion—from this winter and into spring.
Fur Trim
While we always see lots of (faux) fur or leather coats in the colder months of the year, this time, it’s serious. Yes, the ‘mob-wife’ aesthetic took TikTok by storm, and while there is still some residual nods to the look (who doesn’t love a fur coat?!), the more understated version of just fur trim is a trend to keep an eye on this winter.
Hot Hoods
Hoods and balaclavas are essential for those living in cold climates. But they’ve been catching on everywhere over the last few winters, and now are super popular. Keep your ears and head warm while looking so chic in these pieces.
Effortlessly Oversized
Play into the oversized trend by wearing exaggerated silhouettes, like the ones pictured above from the Loewe and Zimmermann FW24 runway. Try the trend for yourself by styling some oversized pieces with a longline coat.
