What styles are hot in Toronto? Here’s the fashion trends you need to know about this summer

Toronto summers are a time to make a bold fashion statement! But if you don’t know where to start, we’ve got you covered on the hottest trends taking over the city this season.

Fashion influencer Myles Sexton says that summer is actually one of their favourite times of the year to people-watch in the city, as that’s when residents’ creativities usually come forward.

“People are just trying out so many different things. [In] other places, they can try out a [summer] trend for maybe eight months of the year, [but] we get three, maybe four, to kind of play into something. But that being said, I think that…it’s cool to see what people are playing with for their summer fashion in Toronto,” they said to Now Toronto.

Meanwhile, Creative Director of global branding company myBRANDWORX Karen Beach, says that while trends can really inspire beautiful looks, the most important thing about fashion is to express yourself and feel your best.

“The most fashionable thing you can be is yourself. That’s the best look you can ever have,” she said. “Style’s individual. So, just be yourself and don’t feel [like] you should be swayed by trends.”

And while Toronto’s multicultural nature invites all kinds of styles, here are some clothing items, accessories and colours that can inspire your outfits this summer.

Items

Gender-neutral clothing

According to Sexton, one of the biggest trends for this summer in Toronto are gender-neutral pieces, such as the so-called “boyfriend shirts.” This trend gives fashionistas a chance to get creative and let go of gender labels when it comes to styling, and include more layering to their looks for uniqueness.

Drapey denim

Be it rain or shine, snow or heatwave, jeans are always a staple item in most wardrobes year-round. But, what jeans are the hot girls wearing this summer? Both Beach and Myles believe that the beloved street style will also mark some of this year’s warm months’ looks, making drapey denim pants a great option for jeans.

Flare pants

Not feeling a baggy look or skinny jeans this summer? Well, flare trousers are making a comeback to offer a compromise between the two. Beach believes that they will be an “it” item on the warmer season, especially combined with tighter and fitted tops.

Corsets

Following the trend of tighter tops, Beach believes that corsets will be a staple piece in a lot of Torontonians’ closets this summer, especially in contrast with baggier bottoms.

Balloon skirts

Another item that recently surged in popularity and seems to be here to stay is the balloon skirt. Perfect to accentuate a more voluptuous silhouette and add some texture to the look, these skirts come in mini, midi and long sizes, and can really bring in a fun and unique touch.

Vintage shirts

Beach says she is also seeing some vintage looks come back into the scene, especially when it comes to prints. According to her, band and vintage-print shirts will be another go-to item this summer for Torontonians. This trend also gives us a chance to find some unique and creative items, including local finds and thrifted gems.

Colours

White and beige

Sometimes, the summer heat screams for lighter colours that can bring in that air of freshness. For that reason, Beach thinks that whites, beiges, and linens will be a common look this season for Torontonians, also reflecting a trend of using more natural colours over vibrant, artificial looks.

Florals

On the other hand, Torontonians will also make the most of these precious warm months to bloom this season. This year, the fashion world is seeing a more modern take on floral prints, from details and accessories to full-on print dresses and shirts. So, don’t be afraid to experiment and add more flowers and colour to your outfits this summer.

Pastel colours

Toronto residents are also enjoying this time to be more daring with their colour combinations in contrast with the regular winter greys. On that note, Beach has observed a trend of mixing soft but vivid pastel colours, such as powder blue with bold orange.

Nautical stripes

Another trend that is always coming and going are the famous navy pastels. If there is one time to bring them back, it is definitely this summer to bring a relaxed and beachy look to your wardrobe.

Accessories

Silver accessories

The beautiful summer sunshine will be the only golden accessory you need this summer, as apparently silver accessories are it for the next few months, from earrings to necklaces and bracelets.

Metals

On that note, metal pieces in general are in this summer. Especially mixed with other accessories like pearl strands, the metal touches can add in some texture and unique finishes to your warm outfits.

Deconstructed bags

Prepare your Labubu dolls and must-haves, as larger, deconstructed bags are also in style this summer.. In contrast with the more traditional, squared or rectangular purses, different shapes and lots of texture will be a go-to for styling in terms of accessories this summer, according to Beach. In addition to these are the beloved tote bags, which are still a major “yes” for this summer fashion scene, allowing for different prints and phrases.
