Princess Theodora of Greece’s Wedding Dress Details, Weds American Matthew Kumar
Princess Theodora of Greece was radiant and regal at her wedding to American lawyer Matthew Kumar on Saturday in Athens.
Held in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, the bride wore an elegant bardot wedding dress, which featured delicate embroidery. The gown was designed by Celia Kritharioti, whose eponymous brand is Athen’s oldest couture house, established in 1906.
“The couple’s desire to have their wedding in Athens reflects their love for Greece, the strong ties they maintain with the country and their desire to share Greek culture and hospitality and identity with their guests,” an official statement from the Greek royal family said.
Theodora accessorized with a series of glamorous family heirlooms. Her long lace veil originally belonged to Princess Margaret of Connaught, and was used to cover the Crown Princess of Sweden’s body after her death in 1920.
The veil was inherited by Margaret’s daughter, Queen Ingrid of Sweden. Since then, each of Ingrid’s female descendants has worn it as their bridal veil, including Theodora’s mother, Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark.
Theodora also wore Princess Margaret’s tiara, a Cartier diadem gifted to the Crown Princess of Sweden on her wedding day by the Khedive of Egypt in 1920. On her wrist, Theodora sported part of a diamond sautoir that belonged to her great-grandmother, Alexandrine, Queen of Denmark.
The lavish wedding comes after the newly-weds had to postpone their wedding twice. Their first ceremony, scheduled for 2020, was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. The couple rescheduled their big day again when Theodora’s father, King Constantine II, died in January 2023 at age 82.
The partners opted for a Greek Orthodox ceremony, which was officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan of Syros, Dorotheos II. Royalty reigned over the guest list, Theodora’s paternal aunt, Queen Sofia of Spain, arriving in a striking in a hot pink look from Spanish designer Alejandro de Miguel.
The mother of the bride, Princess Ann-Marie, shared the same dress designer as her daughter, opting for a strapless blue gown by Celia Kritharioti. Theodora’s brothers, Crown Prince Pavlos and and Prince Phillipos were groomsmen, and their respective wives, Crown Princess Marie-Chantal and Princess Nina of Greece were also in attendance.
Marie-Chantal was ladylike in a peach Louis Vuitton gown, a sparkling silver Aquazzura clutch in-hand. Nina opted for a pale blue silk Adam Lippes gown, paired with a cream clutch from Hunting Season and Manolo Blahnik pumps.
Pavlos and Marie-Chantal’s daughter, Princess Maria-Olympia, was one of Theodora’s bridesmaids, as was the bride’s niece Arrietta Morales y de Grecia, daughter of Princess Alexia. They wore elegant periwinkle dresses made by Kritharioti.
