NYFW Street Style Is All About Varsity Jackets, Knits And Western Chic
New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and designers are showcasing their latest styles as part of their Fall/Winter 2024 collections.
Hot off the heels of Copenhagen Fashion Week, the runway shows will populate Manhattan until February 14. Meanwhile, some of the most viral TikTok fashion trends of 2024 are all over New York City’s street style at the moment, whether it’s the Wild West craze, oversized jersey jackets or knits.
Here are some of the viral fashion trends we are seeing in street style during one of the coldest—albeit hottest—weeks of the year.
Jersey Jackets
It almost feels like the crowds that accumulate outside of runway shows are not gathered to celebrate the fashion or the designer, but to catch a glimpse of a K-pop star.
Lee Jun-ho caused a scene outside at the Tommy Hilfiger show, as well as Win Metawin (Metawin Opas-iamkajorn) alongside Thai actors Phuwin Tangsakyuen and Naravit Lertratkosum.
They all sported Hilfiger’s latest collection, which incorporates the designer’s trademark preppy, uptown looks. The collection boasts a number of knits, trench coats and jersey jackets bearing the brand’s logo.
Varsity jackets have been back in style for a minute. Stars wore them on the Grammy Awards red carpet, and KidSuper just released a limited-edition varsity jacket with Starbucks.
Knits Galore
Knits are also in this season and there is street style to prove it; knit dresses are a major highlight of winter 2024 style. Just look at Christopher John Rogers’ recent Resort collection, which features several rainbow knits that have gone viral.
Loewe’s anagram knits are also a top look this winter, with natural hues and a mohair blend.
White Coats
Rocking a wool coat in winter is one thing, a perfectly-tailored one that brings that “wow” factor is another. Keni Silva nailed it with her white coat at the recent Badgley Mischka show, pairing it up with a pink pantsuit.
While we’ve seen quilted jackets recently, winter coats and vegan coats gain traction this season. Statement coats will usher in spring fashion, from trench coats to bold-colored jackets and pea coats.
Fuzzy Statement Hats
Huge hats are trending, and it might be because we all love a bold fashion statement. Big, fuzzy hats are on the rise, thanks to stars like Emily Ratajkowski who have hit the streets with oversized hats.
The bucket hat is typically seen as a 1990s trend but was revived by Rihanna in 2020. The 2024 hat trend includes fun fur, wool and non-typical hat fabrics. This season, it’s all about maximalism.
The Wild West
Thanks to Pharrell Williams, the Wild West is back. His Louis Vuitton show at Paris Fashion Week confirms that Western chic is here to stay, with cowboy boots, double denim and big belts. It, in fact, shocked the men’s fashion scene.
It’s a strange fashion twist in an environment that is typically all about abstract cuts and quiet luxury, but American West fashion is bound to take over in 2024, much like Barbiecore did in 2023. Watch brands like Ralph Lauren, Isabel Marant and Calvin Klein, among others.
From cattleman hats to open-crown caps and a Gus hat, fashionistas at New York Fashion Week are dressing up their urban chic with Western-inspired looks.
