Saying goodbye to summer is always bittersweet, especially for Canadians preparing for a long, cold season indoors. But for fashion lovers, fall opens up endless styling possibilities. Even better: many of this year’s biggest trends are carrying over into autumn, giving you plenty of ways to work with what you’ve already got. From mood-boosting polka dots to remixed preppy looks, here are the fall fashion trends you’re already starting to see out and about.

Plaids

You can always count on plaid to return once the temperatures dip. This season, though, the pattern feels more polished than grunge. The shift is thanks in part to Burberry — the British fashion house known for its iconic checkered patterns — making a comeback. Expect to see the print worn with sporty separates or styled neatly with pencil skirts and trousers.

Lace

In a continuation of spring and summer’s boho trend, fall brings unexpected touches of lace. The delicate detail showed up in dresses at both Gucci and Fendi’s Fall 2025 shows. For daytime, experiment with layering a sweater over a lace-trimmed top and let the romantic detail peek out from beneath.

Funnel neck

Funnel neck jackets and coats appeared on the Fall 2025 runways at Khaite, Hermès, and Chloé — and street style stars like model Elsa Hosk have taken note. For a casual, sporty vibe, pair this trend with track pants and sneakers. To dress it up, try a long skirt and kitten heels. It’s all about the styling: if you already own a zip-up jacket or sweater without a hood, you’re all set.

Polka dots

Not ready to say goodbye to the joyful polka dot? No need, as the retro print spotted on A-listers and It girls all summer long is seamlessly transitioning into fall. Add a playful touch to your autumn fits by pairing the iconic pattern with cool-weather staples, like leather jackets, cargo pants or cosy knit sweaters.

Barn jackets

The classic work coat that was everywhere last fall is trending again, with brands like Uniqlo and Old Navy selling more affordable takes this season. It’s a great transitional layer for days that start off frigid but warm up by noon. Versatile enough to be dressed up or down, the barn jacket works with a collared shirt, long skirt and loafers during weekdays, or with relaxed denim once the weekend rolls around.

Prep remixed

Those rugby shirts, button-ups and boat shoes you lived in all spring and summer? They’re still a must for fall. Channel a classic Ivy League vibe by adding on an argyle knit or tweed jacket, or remix the look by pairing a striped rugby shirt with statement denim or styling loafers with oversized jean shorts.
