Olivia Henson Marries Hugh Grosvenor in Custom Wedding Dress With Nods to Both Families’ Histories

Olivia Henson may not technically be a member of the royal family, but her tiara-topped ensemble at her Friday wedding to Hugh Grosvenor, the 7th Duke of Westminster, was fit for a queen.

Friday’s ceremony, which was attended by Prince William (who was put to work at the ceremony as an usher) and Princess Eugenie, marked the U.K.’s buzziest society event of the year. Grosvenor has close ties to the royals: His godfather is none other than King Charles III, and he himself is godfather to William’s eldest son, Prince George, and Prince Harry’s son, Prince Archie. (Harry was not in attendance at the ceremony at northern England’s gothic Chester Cathedral, having politely declined his friend’s invitation to avoid an awkward situation with his estranged brother, sources told Vanity Fair.)

Video posted to social media Friday showed Henson arriving to a very windy scene in front of the church, as her dramatic veil whipped around her.

Her custom dress and veil were designed by Emma Victoria Payne. The dress, made of ivory silk crepe satin, and the ivory silk organza veil, featured floral embroidery hand-drawn by Payne, according to Tatler. The look also incorporated a very personal touch: lace edgings from Henson’s great-great-grandmother’s veil from around 1880. The intricate embroidery also has the couple’s wedding date and initials hidden in the design. The neckline and cuffs of the new Duchess’s three-quarter-length sleeved dress were trimmed with scalloped lace. If the dress’s detachable 6-foot train wasn’t dramatic enough, the back of the gown also featured a dropped waistline and a large keyhole opening closed with a button at the top.

Henson donned a Grosvenor family heirloom on her big day as well, wearing the Fabergé Myrtle Leaf Tiara, which dates back to 1906. The diamond tiara has motifs of myrtle leaves and berries, and has been worn by several Grosvenor brides. Something borrowed, indeed.

As for her “something blue,” Henson walked down the aisle on her father’s arm wearing blue statement heels, a bold sartorial choice for a society wedding.

Her bouquet was comprised of flowers picked at Eaton Hall, the Grosvenor family estate: meadow grass, ox-eye daisies, iris, rose, clematis, mock orange, scabious, sweet pea, astrantia, martagon lily, and love in a mist.
