Carnival Cruise Passengers Get Heated Over Formal Fashion Debate
Not only is Carnival Cruise Line taking things to the next level in 2025 with the opening of its new private destination, Celebration Key, but the cruise line also aims to keep passengers satisfied with the service and experience onboard.
For example, Carnival improved on its new gift for loyal VIFP members after receiving scathing feedback, and most recently, the cruise line unveiled swanky upgrades aboard Carnival Spirit following a month-long dry dock. Despite attempts to improve the guest experience, pleasing everyone can still be difficult.
Lately, Carnival’s brand ambassador, John Heald, has received an influx of passenger complaints, including one that led the cruise line to reveal a little-known rule for free Wi-Fi and another that forced Carnival to reiterate its ban on personal coffee makers on ships.
However, the most recent complaint caused a heated debate over formal fashion onboard. Here’s how the argument unfolded.

A Carnival Cruise Line Passenger Complained About Guests Wearing Jeans During Formal Night
The passenger believed jeans should not be allowed in the main dining room
While some people believe jeans can be dressed up or down for any event, others believe jeans are strictly casual wear.
One passenger aboard Carnival Spirit reported seeing other guests wearing jeans of different colors during the ship’s formal night and wrote a message of complaint to brand ambassador John Heald.
“Jeans are denim… doesn’t really matter about the color. They should not be worn on formal nights. NO WAY is denim of any color a formal material. This is why Carnival has the reputation it does. We are onboard Spirit on the [Transatlantic]. Last night, I counted at least 1/2 dozen men and women [wearing] jeans for formal night. [Passengers] who do not [respect] the rules should be forced out of the main dining hall and sent to the buffets. If the crew refuses to do this, then you will [lose] more and more [passengers]…”
The passenger blamed Carnival’s supposed bad reputation on the seemingly relaxed dress code during the formal dinner night. They even suggested that the cruise line remove those wearing jeans from the main dining room and escort them to the buffets.

Carnival’s Policy On Cruise Elegant Evenings Aboard Its Ships
The fashion guidelines are clearly written on Carnival’s website
Carnival Cruise Line does have guidelines on what guests should wear during its Cruise Elegant evenings in the main dining room. The cruise line encourages guests to dress up for the opportunity to take a photo with the ship’s captain. The guidelines differ for women and men.

Although the guidelines are on Carnival’s website, Heald’s response to the complaint seems to suggest that the cruise line is actually more lenient with its Cruise Elegant fashion policies.
“Jeans, wear them, don’t wear them, just enjoy your meal, enjoy the company of your family and friends and the service from our brilliant crew. Simple.”

Cruise Passengers Got Heated Over The Formal Fashion Debate
Although 24% of people said they would never wear jeans in the dining room, 44% also said that it wouldn’t bother them if someone wore jeans during the formal night.
Commenters on Heald’s post were also mostly in favor of not being bothered by other guests wearing jeans during the formal night.
“Formal night isn’t as “special” as it used to be. And that’s ok. You can dress up to your heart’s content and enjoy your night while letting me wear a nice pair of jeans. It’s not a tough concept to grasp. If someone wearing jeans on a formal night ruins your cruise, that’s on you and no one else.”
Others said Carnival needs to revise the fashion guidelines because they’re outdated and not enforced.
“The issue is that the dress code is published and not enforced. Why have a rule that you don’t intend to enforce?”
However, a few commenters wrote that passengers should simply follow the dress code since it’s readily available for review online.
“In all fairness, it is [an] elegant night, and if you don’t want to dress that way, don’t eat in the dining room. You get on the ship knowing the [expectation] of the dress code. It is available for anyone to read.”
