From Floaty Dresses To Fuzzy Jackets, 6 Outfit Ideas For Winter Wedding Guest Dressing

If you’ve received a wedding invitation timed for the winter months, your first reaction – after a teary-eyed ‘awww’ at the romance of it all, naturally – is likely to be panic on what to wear that will a) look suitably effortful for the union of dear friends and b) mean you don’t get frostbite en route to the registry office.

Summer wedding outfits are a cinch. Winter, on the other hand, involves outerwear (always a tricky area when it comes to occasionwear) and the question of whether to wear tights or brave a bare leg in December. Really, though, it’s not that hard. And having been to a cold-weather wedding myself – wearing a tailored black coat and opaque tights by the way – my advice would be to base your outfit around something that can either be warmed up (courtesy of thermals and tights underneath) or that’s already tuned to freezing temperatures (faux fur).

Wondering how that might look exactly? Keep scrolling to see – and shop – six examples of winter wedding outfits that we adapted from the street-style set.

Silky Separates

Tina Leung’s silk negligee separates couldn’t be more appropriate for a festively timed wedding ceremony, providing, of course, that you also blanket said two-piece with an enveloping coat for any portions of the day that might be outdoors.

A Sweater Dress

What could be more practical for winter nuptials than a sweater dress with a point of difference? Massimo Dutti’s mini style will look surprisingly formal teamed with fluid wide-legged trousers – and will almost certainly stand out in a sea of dresses.

A Winter Maxi

Having said that, you can’t deny that a sweeping maxi dress is probably one of the safest bets when it comes to winter-appropriate wedding outfits. Seek out a diaphanous silhouette, or even something high-necked or long-sleeved, and you could even slip a vest underneath, as well as covering your legs as much as possible with over-the-knee boots.

Faux Fur

Instead of fixating on what lies beneath, why not base your outfit around a faux-fur jacket that will have you looking chic and, crucially, feeling warm(ish)? Contrast its neutral colour palette with a pastel like this show-goer outside Miu Miu.

A Winter LBD

An LBD can make for the chicest wedding ensemble. Look for something with statement details, either a tactile fabrication like this street-styler’s or an interesting neckline like Toteme’s, which you can easily warm up with furry outerwear.

A Trouser Suit

Finally, a trouser suit, which can absolutely hit the wedding scene as long as it’s suitably jazzy itself – COS’ sumptuous velvet take is right on the money – or nudged in the festive direction courtesy of crystallised flats or bauble earrings.
